Acorns, acorns everywhere!

2nd Oct 2019

The children in Cedar class have been busy practising their counting skills this week. They have been counting everywhere, reciting numbers in order, singing counting songs, representing numbers and comparing quantities.

Our focused text this week has been Chicken Licken. It has helped to introduce the season of Autumn to the children. In the story an acorn falls from a tree and lands on Chicken Licken. Chicken Licken thinks the sky is falling down. So Cedar class went outside to investigate. The children braved the wet weather and enjoyed finding leaves of different colours. They counted the leaves, they compared colours and sizes and recognised who had more and fewer leaves. It was fun despite the rain. And it’s safe to say the sky wasn’t falling down!

In the classroom there were acorns everywhere. The children counted them, filled bottles until they were full, compared them to empty and half-full bottles. They used the language of fewer and more to compare quantities and enjoyed counting the acorns to see if they were right.

Some children used the acorns to play a counting game and others were set the challenge of finding out how many acorns there were altogether.

The children have also been applying their counting skills during independent play. They have counted the construction pieces in their models. A favourite model of mine this week was the candy floss and ice cream machine. It had four buttons, two to operate the blueberry and strawberry candy floss and two to operate the vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Mmmm sounds delicious!
