Design Engineers in Year 2!
This week, in Year 2, we have been 'Living Life in All Its Fullness' learning about design engineers. We have had the exciting opportunity to explore the Dyson fan. We have been learning about the creations that James Dyson has made and how each problem that he faced created its own design opportunity. This could be a vacuum which loses its suction or a wheelbarrow that gets stuck in the mud. This project has given us the opportunity to explore what a design engineer does and what characteristics are helpful. We already practice our characteristics of resilience and perseverance everyday, but we were shocked to discover that frustration can be useful in helping us to solve problems we may face. After learning all this we became design engineers and thought about solving a problem within our own classrooms. We decided that chairs could be improved so set about the design process to plan and create a prototype for an exciting chair. We had amazing ideas such as chairs with swings for our legs, tables and cup holders, massagers and comfy seats. We were shocked to discover that many designs will have thousands of prototypes made for each item! After having great fun making our prototype number one we evaluated our work to think about how it could be improved upon. Finally we finished off our wonderful learning journey with a small awards ceremony in class to receive our certificates!
