Nursery name writing

24th Mar 2022

Every week in nursery the children practice writing their names. It can be very tempting to whip out a piece of paper and start tracing letters from day one but the children have been building up to this since the start of nursey by developing important pre-writing skills before we moved onto pencil and paper.

It’s important to understand that children first start randomly forming and experimenting with letters, scribbles and lines turn into loops and spirals and then shapes.

At some point, shapes that vaguely resemble letters start to emerge. These are not yet necessarily formed on purpose. At home you will probably see your child start to ‘write’ on his/her drawings, which means he/she is experimenting with forming letters he/she sees often – in the environment, like their name written on artwork, etc.

As you can see they have been working so hard. Well done nursery.
