Rosa Parks ~ Black History Month

15th Nov 2023

This half term, we are living life in all its fullness as we explore black history month through learning about the life and work of Rosa Parks.

Rosa Parks grew up in Montgomery, Alabama and endured a life of segregation and inequality. Did you know she had to walk to a one room school every day, whilst white children rode the bus? Rosa knew this was unfair and she deserved to be treated with fairness.

When she was grown up, Rosa started to fight for fairness and equality for black people. One day, when coming home from the city on a segregated bus, a white man asked Rosa for her seat. Rosa said no. She was then arrested and put in jail for breaking a law and saying no to a white person. Rosa continued to fight for equality and led her city in a boycott of the buses until the segregation laws were changed. But Rosa knew that the rules were still unfair in other places in America, and she fought for complete change.

We have been fascinated by Rosa’s journey and we were so shocked to learn how people were treated.
We recreated Rosa’s day on the bus by splitting the class into people who liked red and people who liked blue. The people who liked red sat at the front of the bus in comfort and the people at the back were freezing cold and uncomfortable. When someone new got on the bus and asked for a blue person’s seat, we all said NO like Rosa Parks!
