Using all of our senses in Nursery

20th Apr 2023

This week we have started to read the book 'Handa's Surprise' which tells the story of a girl in Africa delivering fruits to a friend. On the way many of the cheeky animals steal the fruits from her basket. On Wednesday the children looked closely at the names of the different African animals in the story such as Zebra, Antelope, Elephant, Monkey and Giraffe.

Today we looked closely at some of the fruits from the story. The children were really interested in some of those that were unfamiliar to them like an avocado, pineapple, passion fruit and mango. During the morning the children felt the fruit's skin and drew pictures of them using the correct colours. In the afternoon we looked at the colours inside the fruits and examined the stones and seeds before tasting them, (only if they wanted to of course!) Most of the children loved the mango and the pineapple, the appearance of the passion fruit put some off, but when they tasted it they liked it. The avocado scored a thumbs down!

We also talked about how delicious the fruits tasted and how healthy foods are important to us for helping us to grow and learn. Every day at school the children have different fruits for a snack but it was a great way of experiencing 'Life in all its Fullness' to try something new.
