Marvellous Maths in Fir Class...

25th Jan 2024

This week Fir Class have been celebrating ‘Life in all its Fullness’ in our Maths sessions. Over the last few weeks we have been learning all about place value in the numbers to 20. We have looked at different picture representations for the teen numbers, compared numbers which are ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ and estimated where we might find numbers on a blank number line.

Today we had lots of fun consolidating our learning we some games. We had a carousel of different games which we took turns to play with our friends.

The games we played were:

  • Bingo – We chose three numbers between 10 and 20 and wrote them on our board. When Mrs Smith showed us the picture representation, then we could cross it out. The winner was the first person to cross out all of the numbers.
  • Matching pairs – We took it in turns to turn over two picture cards. If the pictures were the same number then we could keep them, if not then we had to turn them back over. This memory game was very popular!
  • X-ray numbers – Mrs Smith turned over a number line with numbers to 20. We could see 1, 10 and 20. She would say ‘I am thinking of the number 19, can you put your finger where you think it will be?’ The children were amazing at using their number skills to find the correct number. The children then independently started to challenge each other.
  • Greater than/less than dice game - The children took it in turns to roll the giant die which had the ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ symbols on. Then they worked as a team to use the number cards to make a number sentence.

It was lovely to see the children use the learning from the last few weeks in their games. Keep up the super work Fir class.
