Patterns!

2nd Dec 2021

This week we have been focusing on patterns in maths. Pattern is not just an arrangement, but it involves a rule or mathematical relationship. It has been valuable exploring pattern because it develops regularity and order. Learning about pattern has helped the children understand and recognise mathematical rules, solve problems and make generalisations. Through making their own patterns, the children have started learning to apply rules. Though they have developed their skills, they already have an intuitive idea of patterns that starts in play. For example when repeating a sequence pattern of colour, shapes, numbers, sounds or movements. The children really enjoyed making their own pattern using Christmas themed objects. They explored different colours and shapes and created a pattern independently. They have also been busy looking at natural patterns that occur in the environment around them. While being detectives they spotted spirals on flowers, cracks in the trees and stripes on animals.
