Reading is a pleasure.

8th Jun 2023

Reading is an essential life skill and very important to us at Holly Hill School. Reading can open up the world to us and it supports our ethos of life in all its fullness. We want our children to become confident readers so we provide many different opportunities such as, home reading, school reading books, big book, classroom reading areas, visits to the local library and of course our own school library.

Reading daily at home is very important as it gives your child the oppportunity to practise daily with a familiar book which boosts both their fluency and confidence. We also have our reading reward, the children earn a bead each time they read at home. These beads are put into our special jar and when it is full the children can choose a local charity from the list to make a donation to from our school. We are so close to being full so come on Evergreen let’s get reading and fill it up before the end of term.

Big book is another opportunity I mentioned for the children to learn key reading skills. We choose a book which we read as a whole class and then through discussion the children learn new vocabulary and its meaning. They learn how to make predictions and answer questions about the book by retrieving the information. They also learn how to understand the emotions and atmosphere the author is trying to portrait.

We love reading and hope you do to.
