Year 1 turn back time and head to Victorian School

7th May 2024

Today we went back in time to the early 1800’s to experience what life would be like for Victorian Children.

We changed the layout of the classroom, so all the children were facing the front. The boys sat on the first few rows and the girls sat on the back two rows. Every time an adult came into the classroom the children had to stand behind their chairs and greet them. We started the afternoon with some arithmetic and chanted our doubles and ‘one more/one less’. We also completed some addition on our chalk boards and looked at how an abacus worked. We then did some shared reading and writing of a sentence and practised writing the days of the week in our best joined up handwriting using chalk.

We then looked at some special artefacts to guess how they would have been used in Victorian times.

To end the afternoon, we had a carousel of classic playground games (some of the toys are modern but we talked about what materials they might have been made from two hundred years ago). The game choices were skipping with ropes, hopscotch, marbles, skittles, hoop rolling and classic wooden toys.

We had an enjoyable afternoon and really showed 'Life in all it's Fullness' , but we all agreed that we prefer school in 2024!
